Welcome to Carthage, Missouri!

"America's Maple Leaf City"
Carthage was founded as the seat of Jasper County in 1842. The first major Civil War battle west of the Mississippi River was fought here July 5, 1861. Belle Starr, a Confederate spy and outlaw, lived here as a girl. Annie Baxter, the first woman in the United States to hold elective office, was elected County Clerk here in 1890; and James Scott, ragtime musician and composer began his career here in 1906. Many interesting Victorian houses can still be found in Carthage.
