Carthage was founded as the seat of Jasper County in 1842. The first major Civil War battle west of the Mississippi River was fought here July 5, 1861. Belle Starr, a Confederate spy and outlaw, lived here as a girl. Annie Baxter, the first woman in the United States to hold elective office, was elected County Clerk here in 1890; and James Scott, ragtime musician and composer began his career here in 1906. Many interesting Victorian houses can still be found in Carthage.
